Enhancing UC Davis Data Communication in the Stylishly Clear 2023 Aggie Tip Sheet

With the last Aggie Tip Sheet being published in 2019, I was tasked to revive the infographic with a new look that would be utilized for marketing purposes and uploaded to various pages on the UC Davis website. Working cross-functionally with the Director of Brand Management and Marketing, Brand Manager, and Marketing Manager at UC Davis Strategic Communications, my responsibility was to transform a list of relevant statistics and facts into a visually appealing infographic.

With the extensive information that was given to me and analyzing the layout, information, hierarchy, and overall design of previous Aggie Tip Sheets, the majority of my time as the lead designer was spent grouping relevant insights together and testing out different layouts to achieve optimal flow.

Ultimately, I went with a horizontal layout to utilize the extra breathing space, which allowed the necessary information to be laid out neatly for the audience to easily navigate and understand the data, and also incorporated elements from the UC Davis “Outgrow the Expected” brand guide. Going this route allowed for the 2023 Aggie Tip Sheet to have a fresh new look that sets it apart from its predecessors while also facilitating easy access for UC Davis leaders (Chancellor, Provost, Deans, and development officers), external relations professionals, and lead communicators to make observations, give feedback, and promote conversations.

However, the Aggie Tip Sheet, by necessity, accommodates only about 30 of the most notable entries collected from the Budget and Institutional Analysis office of UC Davis Finance, Operations, and Administration. This was a judgment that was based on factors including the perceived esteem of the ranking body, the height and recency of the ranking, and its appeal to key audiences including donors, policy makers, and prospective students and faculty.

Since space on the Aggie Tip Sheet is limited, I gathered feedback from all colleges and departments after the release of the Q1 Aggie Tip Sheet. Leveraging the feedback, I created a Canva template to allow teams to create a custom Tip Sheet for their college or program, allowing for features that didn’t appear on the campus Aggie Tip Sheet.
